CertainTeed, a North American manufacturer of sustainable building materials and part of the multinational Saint-Gobain portfolio, announced new shrink-wrap packaging for its WinterGuard Granular and Sand products.

CertainTeed’s WinterGuard waterproofing shingle underlayment is a composite of asphalt polymers, which the company says ensures vapor-tightness and elasticity. CertainTeed says the protective barrier, part of the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System, is able to stretch and seal around nails driven through it. The product is now in sustainable shrink-wrap packing for two of its finishes, including:

  • Granular — Embedded granules for superior traction during application
  • Sand — Embedded sand to enhance traction during application

CertainTeed noted that it strives to make “continuous, sustainable advancements” across all facets of its business, and improvement of its WinterGuard Sand and WinterGuard Granular underlayment packaging provides contractors and customers with a lighter alternative to boxes.

The new packaging:

  • Contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and global warming potential
  • Reduces the warehouse footprint, so customers can store more product
  • Allows for more rolls per pallet with roll weight reduction, leading to a reduction in freight costs
  • Products are easier to handle and more resistant to outdoor elements

Significant investments in CertainTeed’s Shakopee, Minn., plant improved the palletization and packaging of its products, further positioning the brand as an industry leader committed to a more sustainable future. CertainTeed said it expects a significant CO2 emission reduction from the transportation of the packaging alone, contributing to a greener supply chain.
